The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) will host its seventh annual Bergh Ball on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Each year, the event draws a passionate crowd of animal lovers who come to dine and dance in support of the ASPCA's mission. This year's "Raining Cats and Dogs" event is expected to raise $500,000. Long-time ASPCA supporters expected to attend include celebrity columnist Cindy Adams, NBC Today Show host Matt Lauer, WNBC-TV's Chuck Scarsborough and Felicia Taylor and NBC Today Show personality Jill Rappaport. Also in attendance will be ASPCA Special Investigator Anne Marie Lucas, one of the stars of the hit reality series Animal Precinct. Airing on the Animal Planet network, the original reality series chronicles the work of the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement agents as they investigate cases of animal cruelty.

Since 1866, the ASPCA has been committed to alleviating pain, fear and suffering in all animals. The ASPCA is the oldest humane organization in the Western Hemisphere and was founded by Henry Bergh, a philanthropist who recognized the inhumane treatment suffered by many animals in our society.

With over 740,000 members and donors supporting the privately funded organization, the spirit of Henry Bergh lives on today. The ASPCA provides national programming and leadership in humane education and public awareness, government affairs and public policy, shelter support, animal placement, animal medical services and poison control services. While there is no direct reporting relationship with other SPCA's, the ASPCA National Shelter Outreach department provides extensive assistance and support to shelters nationwide. The New York City headquarters houses a full-service animal hospital, animal behavior center, adoption facility, and Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Department, which is responsible for enforcing New York's animal cruelty laws.

The Chairmen of this year's Bergh Ball are: Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Farkas, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin V. Lambert, Ms. Margo MacNabb and Mr. James Nederlander, Jr. Expected guests include Mr. and Mrs. William Walters, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Puris, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lindenbaum, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Lufkin, Mr. Mark Gilbertson, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Wohl, Dr. Sherrill Aston and Ms. Muffie Potter Aston, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marston, Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Perelman, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rudin, Mr. and Mrs. Richard C.
