National Eating Disorders AssociationThe National Eating Disorders Association is dedicated to expanding public understanding of eating disorders and promoting access to quality treatment for those affected along with support for their families through education, advocacy and research. The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) formed when Eating Disorders Awareness & Prevention (EDAP) joined forces with the American Anorexia Bulimia Association (AABA) to create the largest eating disorders prevention and advocacy organization in the world. The merger was the most recent in a series of alliances that has also included the National Eating Disorder Organization (NEDO) and Anorexia Nervosa & Related Eating Disorders (ANRED). Each organization has contributed years of valuable experience, unique programming, and the commitment of the field's most renowned clinicians, educators and researchers to create a unified force in the fight against eating disorders.
Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, with an office in New York, the National Eating Disorders Association is staffed by 10 employees and many dedicated volunteers. The organization is guided by a 20-member Board of Directors and numerous councils and committees. Many dedicated family members, educators, and health care professionals support the organization with membership dues and contributions.
We sponsor National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) held during the last week of February each year. There are over 500 EDAW coordinators – health care providers, teachers, social workers and eating disorders professionals – who distribute educational materials and organize awareness and prevention events on high school and college campuses, in hospitals and community centers across the U.S. and Canada. We also operate a Toll-free Information & Referral Helpline at 1-800-931-2237, the first eating disorders information and referral source of its kind in the world, linking more than 1,200 callers per month to vital information and life-saving treatment. Our searchable database of more than 600 treatment providers throughout the U.S. and Canada is also available on our website (www.NationalEatingDisorders.org), which currently receives more than 5,000 hits per day -- approximately 2 million hits per year!
