Bread for the World joins the world community in mourning the death of Pope John Paul II while remembering his life's work and accomplishments.

"Pope John Paul II continuously acted as a friend to poor and hungry people throughout the world," said David Beckmann, President of Bread for the World. "He moved Catholics and non Catholics alike to act in practical solidarity, to ease the burden of debt so that developing nations can feed their people, to end the scourge of land mines so that fields could be cultivated in safety, to name just two of his many efforts."

In one of his last major addresses, the Pope told the world diplomatic community in February that providing food and ending hunger is one of the "great challenges facing humanity today."
