Award, made possible by Frances Dillard Endowed Fund, honors caring, compassionate aides

Edna Reese and Debrha Tyler, both health aides with the University of Michigan Health System Michigan Visiting Nurses, were named recipients of the Frances Dillard Home Health Aide Service Award for 2003 for their valued dedication and commitment to patients and families for more than 20 years.

The award, created to honor home health aides who exemplify the qualities of caring, commitment and compassion, was presented to Tyler and Reese, along with a monetary stipend at the MVN Ann Arbor office in November.

Tyler, a model of dependability and commitment to patient care, received the honor for her dedication to tailor patients' care to meet their physical and emotional needs. Reese, who is held in the highest regard by her peers, was recognized for her positive outlook and ability to motivate others within the organization, says Kathleen S. Gold, RN, MHSA, CHCE, director of UMHS Home Care Nursing and President and CEO of MVN.

"Debrha and Edna are true models of comfort and caring to those whose lives they touch, day in and day out," says Gold, who presented the pair with the award. "Michigan Visiting Nurses is proud and honored that they are members of our team."

Both award recipients will also have their names engraved on a plaque that will be displayed at the MVN office.

The Health Aide Service Award is made possible through proceeds from the Frances Dillard Endowed Fund at MVN. The fund, created in 2001 with a generous donation by Drs. Marylen and Harold Oberman of Ann Arbor, was established in memory of home health aide and former MVN employee Frances Dillard. Dr. Marylen Oberman is a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of MVN. Contributions from past patients and their families have also contributed to the award.

MVN, part of UMHS, is a non-profit organization that has served the community since 1909. For more information about MVN, visit www.umvn.org.
