Focus on the Family
Dr. James Dobson, founder and chairman of Focus on the Family, announced today that former Congressman Steve Largent is joining the organization's Board of Directors.
"Steve Largent is a good man who has excelled at everything he has done," said Dr. Dobson, "and all of us are now pleased to welcome him to our Board of Directors. For nearly two decades he's been involved with Focus on the Family in a variety of ways, and we look forward to benefiting from his expertise in this new capacity."
Mr. Largent served over seven years as a member of the U.S. Congress (R-OK) after a long and successful career as an NFL wide receiver. As a Congressman, Mr. Largent held positions on several powerful committees, including the Commerce, Budget and Science Committees. He served as Vice Chairman of Commerce Committee's Energy and Power Subcommittee the last two years he was in Congress, 2000-2001.
After obtaining a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Tulsa, Mr. Largent joined the Seattle Seahawks as a wide receiver from 1976 to 1989. Largent set six different career records and participated in seven Pro Bowls during his career. In 1988 he was named NFL Man of the Year for his contributions to his community and family. In 1989 he retired from pro football, and was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on January 28, 1995.
"Steve has a valuable depth of understanding coupled with a great heart for people and families," Dr. Dobson stated.
Since his unsuccessful bid for the Oklahoma governorship in 2002, Steve Largent has continued to channel his efforts to help others - primarily as Executive Director and spokesperson for the Wheelchair Foundation. He is working to help that organization deliver over 1 million wheelchairs to the poor internationally by reaching out to corporations and to the faith-based community.
In August 2002, while campaigning for Largent, President George W. Bush praised Largent's personal integrity noting that "Steve's principles are indelibly etched on his heart." He and his wife, Terry, have four children and reside in Oklahoma.
