Focus on the Family Vice President Bill Maier applauded Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist for his statements Sunday on ABC's "This Week" in support of the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA). FMA would restrict the courts from defining marriage as anything other than between one man and one woman.

According to Maier, courts throughout North America are attacking the sanctity of marriage like never before in history. "Canada has legalized homosexual marriage. The courts in Massachusetts and New Jersey may follow suit this year," said Maier.

"Last week's Supreme Court ruling affirming homosexual sodomy should be a wake-up call for all Americans," said Maier. "Gay activists have stated that their goal is to radically alter an 'archaic institution' and 'transform the notion of family' entirely."

"The Federal Marriage Amendment is the only sure way to protect the institution of marriage from being dismantled by gay activists and radical deconstructionist judges," added Maier.

Focus on the Family believes that the institution of marriage between one man and one woman is the very foundation of society. A mountain of social science evidence exists confirming that heterosexual marriage has tremendous benefits for men, women, children, and society.

"By changing the definition of marriage, the courts are attacking the institution of marriage itself," stated Maier. "Bill Frist is to be congratulated on his boldness in recognizing the need to protect the lifeblood of culture."
