Peers of Nonie Valdepeñas say that she has raised the standard for leadership among the volunteers at Goodwill Industries of the Philippines (Manila). For three consecutive years, Valdepeñas has served as president of the GIVS organization in Manila. And over the course of that time, has spearheaded monthly activities to generate Goodwill funds and donations and to promote Goodwill's mission of helping others.
Each month, Valdepeñas coordinates activities to benefit Goodwill participants. Last year, she organized a donation drive in January, a Valentine party in February, a picnic for clients and their families in April, a free medical and dental mission in July, a dinner dance in October and a holiday party in December. Monthly birthday parties honor Goodwill staff, volunteers and clients. She also planned a raffle to obtain the necessary funds for a new water tank for the Goodwill offices, ensuring that an adequate supply of fresh drinking water will be maintained.
Valdepeñas' tenacity for the Goodwill mission serves as a model for all domestic and international volunteers. She is a glaring example of the organization's commitment to the international movement of serving people with disabilities," says Dorothy Farkas, President of Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services. "We are honored to present Valdepeñas with the Elsine Katz Volunteer Leadership Award." An award established to highlight the expanding role of the volunteer in Goodwill Industries and the organization's commitment to serving people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.
Since 1997, Valdepeñas has served on the Goodwill's board of directors. In 2000, she was named third vice-president, and in 2001, second vice-president. She performed her board duties while serving as treasurer of GIVS in 2000, and as its president since 2001. She is untiring in her leadership efforts to serve those with disabilities, and humbly proclaims she derives her inspiration for her work from the very people she serves.
