Washington, DC - February 12, 2001 - The results of the 53rd annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign, conducted during October, November and December 2000, have been tabulated. U.S. Marines distributed more than 15,800,000 new toys and brought the joy of Christmas and a message of hope to over 6,300,000 needy children throughout the nation.
The 2000 campaign was the most successful campaign in the 53-year history of Toys for Tots. Marines exceeded the previous record setting campaign by 2,000,000 toys and 400,000 children.
Toys for Tots began with a single local campaign in Los Angeles in 1947. Fifty-three annual campaigns later, local Toys for Tots campaigns were conducted in 351 communities covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This was the most extensive coverage in the history of Toys for Tots.
Toys for Tots is the U.S. Marine Corps' premier community action program, one of the nation's flagship Christmas charitable causes and the only charitable endeavor within the Department of Defense which reaches outside the military establishment to make a difference in lives and communities nationwide
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, the fund raising and support organization for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, had an equally successful year during 2000. The Foundation supplemented the toy collections of local community campaigns with 4,500,000 toys valued at $35,000,000, provided 35 tons of promotional and support materials valued at $250,000, and provided a broad range of other support essential to the success of the 2000 campaign.
One of the success factors of the 2000 Toys for Tots campaign was the support and generosity of the 60 National Corporate Sponsors:
