Washington, DC May 14, 2001 - The Sixth Annual Marine Toys for Tots Foundation Golf Classic was the kick-off event for the 2001 Toys for Tots fund raising campaign. With donations of nearly $112,000 received to date and an expected additional $5,000 in personal donations, this year's tournament was the most successful ever.

On Monday May 14, 2001, 144 golfers gathered at the Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia to launch the Foundation's 2001 fund raising campaign. Excellent weather conditions (clear sky and 70 degree temperature) and the excellent condition of the golf course made it a perfect day for a golf tournament. Fifty-four corporations, from throughout the nation, supported this year's tournament. Participating golfers represented 36 of these corporations and included corporate executives, Marine Corps, and Navy general and flag officers along with an array of other Toys for Tots supporters. The 30th Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Carl E. Mundy, Jr. and the past Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General John R. Dailey participated along with former Secretary of the Navy H. Lawrence Garrett, III and former U.S. Congressman David O'B. Martin. Participants came from as far away as Des Moines, IA.

The tournament, which began with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m., was preceded by a continental breakfast and followed by a banquet and awards ceremony. The format was a best ball scramble using a tournament handicap system to select team winners based on low net team scores. Prizes were presented to the first through twelfth place teams with a sportsman award to the team with the highest net score. Concurrently, prizes were presented to individual golfers for the longest drive, straightest drive and closest to the pin. Hole-in-one prizes, available on each of the four par 3 holes, were sponsored by InsurMark Group and Ourisman Ford. There were no hole-in-one winners this year. Each player received a favor bag containing a golf wind vest, golf cap (donated by MC Direct), two golf towels, a divot tool by Linkskeeper and 1.5 dozen golf balls. Golf balls were donated by Computer Sciences Corporation, Dodge Division of DiamlerChrysler, OnTime Toys and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Each participant received a versatile, attractive and useful favor "tote" bag, displaying the Toys for Tots logo, that was designed and donated by International Graphics. Participants had an opportunity to bid on twenty silent auction items and to win one of eleven raffle prizes. Mrs. Nancy Lee White Hoffman, of the Leatherneck Magazine, spent the day taking action photographs of tournament players. Her photos will appear in our next newsletter.
