Washington, DC: October 10, 2001 -- The 54th annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign began on Monday, October 1, 2001. Created in the fall of 1947 in Los Angeles, California by Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks, Toys for Tots today, is one of the nation's flagship Christmas charitable endeavors. Over the past 53 years, Marines have distributed over 272,000,000 toys to some 133,000,000 needy children across the nation.

The Fund Raising Campaign for the 2001 Toys for Tots Campaign was launched on May 14th with the annual fund raising golf tournament held at the Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia. This was followed by the annual reception at Marine Barracks, Washington, DC on Friday evening, June 8th.

The next event will be the National Campaign Kick-Off Luncheon at noon on Friday, November 16th at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The goals of the Luncheon are to formally kick-off the 2001 U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign; increase the visibility of Toys for Tots and enhance ties with sponsors, supporters, donors and business partners. The guest of honor is General James L. Jones, USMC, Commandant of the Marine Corps. We expect 400 attendees.

In addition to these national campaign events, golf tournaments, 5 and 10-kilometer foot races, and kick-off luncheons are held in many of the 381 communities throughout the 50 states in which local Toys for Tots campaigns are conducted.

From October through December, U. S. Marines - with the support of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, the Marine Corps League and an array of other organizations, groups, committees, local businesses, national corporations and individual volunteers - work tirelessly to collect new, unwrapped toys which they distribute to needy children at Christmas. In many communities, Marines and those who support them can be found hard at work until late on Christmas Eve when they conclude their annual campaign and return home to their own families.

At Christmas 2000, the Marines collected and distributed over 15,800,000 toys. With these toys Marines brought the joy of Christmas and a message of hope to over 6,300,000 needy children nationwide. These results made the 2000 Toys for Tots campaign the most successful in the history of the program.

The goal for the 2001 Campaign is to reach more needy children than ever before. Everyone can help Marines achieve this goal. Simply drop off a new unwrapped toy at a Toy for Tots collection box nearest you and Marines will do the rest.
